Does additional income, require you send in a tax payment for it before you file your April 15th retu?

If you get additional income (where no withholding is done, like from the sale of stock) while you have a regular full-time job, must you send in an early tax payment for it, or can you wait until April 15th to file? Where is this documented in the IRS tax publications?
